Spain's streets flooded with tourists pasting tomatoes at each other faces as the annual “Tomatina” street battle took place in the eastern town of Buñol.

ZNMD fame
The festival gained fame in India, after the popular film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) was released in 2011. The makers created this famous Tomatina festival and to shoot the scene, 16 tons of tomatoes were flown in from Portugal, as the local Spanish tomatoes were not ripe enough. Reportedly, the tomatoes came at a whopping price of Rs 1 crore.

Streets awash in red pulp
Trucks tipped 120 tons of overripe tomatoes into the main street of the town for participants to throw. The street fight left both the street and participants drenched in red pulp.

Why it is celebrated?
The festival is held on the last Wednesday of August and was inspired by a food fight between local children in 1945 in the town, located in a tomato-producing region.
