In Wisconsin, three ordinary shipping containers have been transformed into an unusual holiday home with two bedrooms, a rooftop deck, a private sauna and an outdoor hot tub. Called Maison Flambeau, the holiday home is located in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, and offers approximately 800 square feet (74 square metres) of interior space. Designed by Backcountry Containers, the property boasts of modern amenities with outdoor relaxation areas, including riverfront views and woodland trails. The company's website lists the product at $49,500, but this price should not be confused with the cost of constructing Maison Flambeau.

Maison Flambeau uses three repurposed shipping containers to create a multi-level living space. Two 40-foot (12.2-metre) containers and one smaller 20-foot (6.1-metre) container form the structure, with two containers positioned side by side and the third placed above one end, the website explains. The containers have been extensively modified with windows, doors and other features to make the property suitable for residential use. The exterior is painted blue, giving the unusual structure a uniform appearance.

The small house contains a living room, kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and its layout has been designed designed to make efficient use of the available space. The main entrance opens into a living room furnished with a sofa bed, two armchairs and a wall-mounted television. The room also has a mini-split air-conditioning unit and a ceiling fan.

The kitchen offers more open space and is equipped with a sink, induction cooktop, refrigerator and freezer, microwave and dishwasher. A dining table provides a separate place for meals.

There are two bedrooms in the property. The main bedroom has a queen-sized bed, while the second bedroom features a queen bed and a raised bunk-style bed above it. The latter also includes storage space, providing additional room for guests. The main bathroom has a glass-enclosed shower, a sink, a flushing toilet and a stacked washer and dryer. A second, smaller bathroom comes with a toilet, bidet and sink.

Private sauna, hot tub and rooftop deck are among the highlights

Maison Flambeau also features an elevated outdoor deck that can be accessed from an upstairs office and hangout area. The space includes seating and a desk indoors, while the deck has patio furniture and a barbecue.

A separate staircase provides direct access to the ground, making it easier for guests to move between the upper deck and the outdoor areas. The design takes advantage of the containers' stacked arrangement, creating additional usable space without expanding the home's footprint at ground level.

Maison Flambeau sits on 14 wooded acres and has approximately 600 feet of shoreline along the Flambeau River, according to its official website. Guests can enjoy an outdoor hot tub overlooking the river, a private electric sauna and walking trails through the surrounding woodland. The sauna can accommodate up to four adults, making it suitable for small groups.

Backcountry Containers also offers a standalone SaunaPlunge product, combining a sauna with a plunge-pool setup. Its sauna area fits up to four adults and has an electric sauna heater, while its plunge pool fits up to six adults.
