US President Donald Trump has renewed his attack on the Supreme Court’s interpretation of birthright citizenship, arguing that the provision was never intended to grant automatic citizenship to children of wealthy foreign nationals. Speaking at the inauguration of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota, Trump claimed the original constitutional intent was to protect the children of formerly enslaved people after the Civil War.
