Elon Musk’s political risk, worth almost $500 million, has been met with a new challenge as the Democratic Party captured the majority in both houses of Congress in the 2026 mid-term US elections. The outcome has altered the political scenario for the billionaire, whose companies have numerous business ties involving government contracts, approvals, and infrastructure projects. The reaction from the market was quite interesting. While the general US stock market witnessed a rally in light of the victory for the Democrats, Tesla and SpaceX stocks went the other way, dropping in pre-market trade on Wednesday.

The divergence in performance has led many to wonder if Musk's political bets might end up posing additional problems for his corporate empire.

The result is also a blow for Musk politically, who has made significant investments in Republican candidates in Texas, where he has built his major operations.

However, does this mean that his companies are now in danger, or is it just Wall Street readjusting itself to the new political climate?

Tesla and SpaceX shares fall as Wall Street celebrates Democratic victory

Market reaction has brought to light two different responses from investors towards the election results. According to Reuters, stocks for Tesla fell about 3.6%, and SpaceX dropped by approximately 3.8% in pre-market trade on Wednesday.

It is clear that investors like the idea of the election creating division and thus preventing any abrupt changes from being introduced into policy-making.

However, Musk's businesses of Musk are highly dependent on government decisions and therefore the election results are very important for the future outlook for the companies.

SpaceX works together with NASA and US national security organisations, and Tesla operates in an industry highly affected by federal policies on cars, tax benefits, and energy.

The fall in share prices does not necessarily mean that the loss was a result of the election alone, since the value of companies, the state of the technology sector, and expectations from investors play an important role in the process as well.

Musk's $500 million Republican gamble faces a Texas setback

The amount spent by Musk on political activity was high.

According to the analysis of Federal Election Commission records carried out by The Guardian, he donated around $445.77 million to politically right-wing organisations up until October 29, 2026. Some $216 million went into his America PAC.

Texas was an important part for Musk politically and economically since the headquarters of Tesla and SpaceX's major operations were there.

But Democrats made impressive gains during the 2026 elections.

Gina Hinojosa won against Republican Greg Abbott to become the next governor of Texas, bringing to an end three decades of Republican control of the governor's office.

Hinojosa had criticised the favourable deals made with Musk's companies and asked for protection when it comes to data centre development and use of public resources.

Thus, the political changes may prove to be problematic for Musk when dealing with state officials, as he needs land, electricity and other regulatory assistance for expansion of his companies' operations.

Nevertheless, a change in political leadership doesn't mean that existing deals are voided and ongoing projects are automatically halted.

Government contracts and AI ambitions could face greater scrutiny

However, a much larger issue is how Democrats will make use of their majority to scrutinise the government dealings of Musk.

SpaceX has a number of government contracts; some of these are related to NASA and national security. Meanwhile, Tesla will always be vulnerable to changes in electric vehicle incentives and regulations.

Democratic legislators have already expressed their desire to investigate Musk's government affairs and his earlier experience in the Department of Government Efficiency.

The chairperson of the House Oversight Committee in 2023, Robert Garcia, was said to have a keen interest in probing certain Musk dealings.

An interesting issue that has attracted the attention of the public is a potential Tesla-SpaceX merger. It is reported by Reuters that Bloomberg news suggests that talks on a possible merger could go ahead in 2027.

The AI goals of Musk could be faced with some difficulties. Data centres need huge amounts of energy and investment.

The democratic legislators are concerned about the cost of these facilities both environmentally and to the local community, while Hinojosa calls for stronger protections in Texas.

Congress does not have the authority to revoke any government contracts or to stop all corporate dealings on its own. But increased scrutiny would make things harder for Musk.

What happens next for Musk's business empire?

A win by the Democrats does not mean that companies like Tesla and SpaceX will necessarily lose out on government contracts and become restricted.

Musk still controls his companies, and the agreements that the companies have do not get affected by this election outcome.

The difference will be that he no longer has the same political power.

With all the money that Musk has spent on Republicans, he will have to operate in a different world now, where the Democrats are in charge in Washington and where they have made gains in Texas.

It is crucial for investors to know whether there will be any practical problems in the form of financial and operational difficulties in the companies due to the political change.
