Switzerland's coronavirus situation has taken a turn for the worse after stabilising at a high level. The country will introduce new restrictions from the weekend which will include a 7pm closing time for shops and restaurants.

Infection rates are rising and the availability of beds is dwindling. Officials said the government would meet on Friday to propose a set of control measures for the country which will be applicable till the end of January.

The measures also aim to reduce the number of people allowed to gather for private events with exceptions for Christmas and New Year festivities.

The country has a population of 8.6 million and has recorded over 357,000 cases and 5,000 deaths. Switzerland had earlier notified that it had secured three million doses of the Moderna vaccine.
