Stuck in Space till 2025: What will Sunita Williams do on her extended stay on ISS?

The name Sunita Williams certainly needs no introduction! the American astronaut has become a modern-day icon after news of her and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore stuck in space hit headlines. williams was initially set to return to earth in June of this year. however, ongoing issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft caused the space mission to be prolonged by several months.

Sunita Williams has participated in multiple space missions, notably serving as a flight engineer aboard the International Space Station (iss), where she carried out numerous experiments and spacewalks. with a career totaling over 322 days in space, she stands among NASA's most seasoned astronauts.

Her father deepak pandya was an Indian-born neuroanatomist from Mehsana district, Gujarat, while her mother, Ursuline Bonnie Pandya (née Zalokar), was a Slovenian-American.

williams completed her high school education at Needham high school in 1983. she earned a bachelor of science in physical science from the United States Naval Academy in 1987 and went on to obtain a master of science in engineering management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.

Her initial venture into space began on December 9, 2006. during expedition 14/15, spanning from December 9, 2006, to June 22, 2007, Sunita Williams took on the role of flight engineer. during this mission, she set a world record for women by completing four spacewalks, accumulating a total of 29 hours and 17 minutes.

Her second space mission commenced on July 14, 2012, and expedition 32/33 continued until November 18, 2012. Williams dedicated four months to research and exploration aboard the orbiting laboratory. after spending 127 days in space, she returned to Earth, landing in Kazakhstan on November 18, 2012.​

On June 5, 2024, Sunita Williams embarked on a mission aboard the Boeing starliner. originally planned to last one week, the mission has been extended. due to helium leaks in the starliner, leaving the spacecraft docked at the international space station.

She is presently fulfilling the role of pilot for the crew flight test mission on boeing’s starliner spacecraft—the vehicle’s inaugural crewed flight—and is undertaking her third mission on the international space station, according to nasa.

NASA has rescheduled the planned return three times, and now has no date set for it, as per a report by Reuters. Since its June 5 liftoff, the capsule has had five helium leaks, five maneuvering thrusters go dead and a propellant valve fail to close completely, prompting the crew in space and mission managers in Houston to spend more time than expected pursuing fixes mid-mission.

Starliner can stay docked at the ISS for up to 45 days, according to comments by NASA's commercial crew manager Steve Stich to reporters. But if absolutely necessary, such as if more problems arise that mission officials cannot fix in time, it could stay docked for up to 72 days, relying on various backup systems, according to a person familiar with flight planning quoted by Reuters.

In a statement, Steve Stich, manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, said, "We are taking our time and following our standard mission management team process," according to ABC News report. Stich added, "We are letting the data drive our decision-making relative to managing the small helium system leaks and thruster performance we observed during rendezvous and docking."

As of now, there is no official return date of the flight. Internally at NASA, Starliner's latest targeted return date is July 6, according to the source quoted by Reuters, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Such a return date would mean that the mission, originally planned for eight days, instead would last a month. Even with the propulsion system issues, NASA has said Starliner still would be capable of returning the astronauts to Earth if absolutely necessary - that is, if the capsule must serve as an escape pod from the ISS in an emergency or if any of Starliner's perishable items - such as its solar panels - show signs of expiring earlier than planned.
