The Army has been mobilised in response to the protesting students targeting colleges across Dhaka over the last few days. Since the interim government took charge in August, the overall law and order situation in Bangladesh has rapidly deteriorated, with Islamists and criminals creating turmoil and an atmosphere of fear.
Meanwhile, a group of British MPs have written to UK foreign secretary David Lamy warning against the gaining of ground by extremists since the collapse of the Hasina government. The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Commonwealth in the UK has recorded more than 2,000 atrocities since the fall of Hasina's government and alleged that the current regime may be weaponising the legal system to seek revenge.
"This report will be a step in our efforts to raise awareness of issues affecting important Commonwealth partners," said APPG chairman Tory MP Andrew Rosindell.
