No origin
After someone on board spotted the structure, pilot Bret Hutchings told local media, the helicopter set down nearby, and when the crew went to take a closer look, there was "no obvious indication" of how the monolith got there. The area remains undisclosed to restrict gawkers.

Space Odyssey tribute
While many have joked about the monolith being a possible alien object, others think it is just an homage to Stanly Kubrick's classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film shows a similar monolith playing a key role in mankind's evolution from apes.
