Elon Musk mocked his election spending with sarcastic posts on X after Democrats made major gains in the 2026 US midterm elections, despite his financial backing of Republican candidates.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk posted two sarcastic messages on X following sweeping Democratic victories in the 2026 US midterm elections, where Republicans faced major setbacks despite Musk’s substantial financial backing. In one post, he quipped, "Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now," and followed up with, "Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time."

The comments followed major Democratic gains, with US networks projecting the party to take back control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, altering the balance of power in Washington. Musk, the world's wealthiest individual, was among the largest donors to Republican candidates during this cycle, contributing roughly USD 250 million to congressional campaigns according to NBC News.

A primary focus of his spending was the Texas Senate race, in which Republican Ken Paxton lost to Democrat James Talarico, handing Democrats a major victory in a historically conservative state. During his victory speech, Talarico directly cited Musk, framing his race as a David versus Goliath struggle against Musk, President Donald Trump, and the Washington, DC establishment.

Musk's post regarding space-based data centers hinted at transferring operations off-planet, reflecting potential regulatory and policy shifts for artificial intelligence and data infrastructure under a Democratic-led Congress. Following the election outcomes, stock futures declined overnight over concerns regarding the technology and data center industries.

The midterm results underscore a notable reversal for Musk given the extent of his political spending. Despite his financial support, several key Republican candidates were defeated, and Democrats gained ground in traditional conservative strongholds. With majorities in both chambers, Democrats are positioned to challenge Trump's legislative efforts and increase oversight of his administration over the final two years of his term.
