South Korean court gives ex-First Lady Kim Keon Hee 20 months jail term for accepting bribes
A South Korean court on Wednesday (January 28) sentenced former First Lady Kim Keon Hee to one year and eight months in jail after finding her guilty of accepting bribes. The court cleared Kim on charges of stock price manipulation and violating the political funds act. Prosecutors had alleged Kim reaped about 800 million won ($561,900) of profits in 2010 and 2011 by participating in illegal stock manipulation, and said she received two Chanel bags, a diamond necklace and Korean ginseng, which were estimated to be worth about 80 million won ($56,170), from the Unification Church as part of its efforts to win influence.
