Smuggled guns, a deadly prison shootout and 10 deaths: The unanswered questions surrounding a riot in one of Mexico’s most violent states plagued with cartel rivalries and prison security failures
A violent incident occurred at El Castillo Penitentiary Centre in Mazatlán, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. The conflict led to the deaths of nine prisoners and one visitor during a shootout. Following the incident, military and law enf...

As a result of the event, the military, together with other members of law enforcement, were deployed to the prison and prison visits were suspended while an investigation into the deaths was conducted.
Firearms have become a key issue, as local reports pointed to a shootout inside the prison initially. Later, the prosecutors confirmed the use of firearms of both types during the conflict; however, only two 9mm pistols were found.
How did firearms get inside El Castillo prison?
With the discovery of weapons at El Castillo, the prison’s security has come into question. It is supposed to ensure that prisoners do not have access to weapons, which makes the involvement of firearms in the deadly fight an urgent problem for the investigation team.It was reported by the security forces of Sinaloa that there was shooting during the initial fight. According to the prosecutors, the findings suggest that there was use of both pistols and long-barrel weapons. The authorities mentioned finding two 9 mm pistols in the prison.
The question is left open as to how the weapons got into the possession of the prisoners. This question should be answered by the investigators – whether the weapons were brought in secretly or somehow else.
This difference is crucial because although the discovery of the arms proves that firearms were indeed present, this alone does not necessarily prove whose hands they came into or if they were used by prison staff members.
The investigation is also bound to look into the chain of events leading up to the altercation as well as who was behind it all, including an examination of whether security checks missed weapons before the clash happened.
Until the authorities come up with more information, any assertions regarding how and through whom the weapons were smuggled are merely speculation.
A family visit turned into a deadly confrontation
The violence unfolded during family visiting hours, adding a devastating dimension to the incident. Among the 10 people killed was a young child visiting a relative inside the prison, according to state authorities.Sixteen inmates were injured and taken for medical treatment. Officials did not initially provide a full public account of how the confrontation began or explain the circumstances surrounding each death.
The scale of the violence triggered a response involving multiple security agencies. Members of the Mexican Army, National Guard, Navy and state security forces entered the facility to restore order. Authorities later said the prison was under control and that the remaining inmate population was safe.
Visits were suspended as a precaution, while prison social workers began contacting the victims’ families.
The response brought the immediate disturbance under control, but it did not resolve the central questions about the incident. Investigators still needed to establish what sparked the confrontation, how firearms were used and whether warning signs had been missed.
The violence also raised concerns about the safety of people who enter prisons to visit relatives. Family visits bring civilians into correctional facilities, making the ability to prevent and contain violence inside them especially important.
A separate clash was reported at El Castillo less than 24 hours later, leaving two additional inmates dead, according to subsequent local reporting. That second incident was investigated separately, bringing the reported death toll from the two episodes to 12.
Sinaloa’s cartel conflict adds to concerns over prison security
This violence took place in the context of a broader security crisis in Sinaloa, which is one of the northwestern states of Mexico and where fighting among rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel has been ongoing for some time now.Tensions have escalated since 2024 due to a dispute between factions related to the sons of the former head of the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán – Los Chapitos, and supporters of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
This broader crisis has raised concerns about the possibility that tensions between rival gangs might spill over into prison conditions and lead to disturbances among prisoners who are members of rival gangs. However, there was no official confirmation that this clash at El Castillo was related to the feud within the Sinaloa Cartel.
The case also demonstrates how difficult it is to maintain order inside the prison facility amid violence outside its walls. This is evident from the use of guns, the high number of victims and the deadly fight that ensued.
For investigators, the priority would be to clarify how the incident happened, who is behind it and where the guns came from.
