Even as the Bangladesh government dilly dallys on PM Tareque Rehman's India trip this month and outlined "conditions" for the visit, a six-member delegation of Bangladesh's military intelligence organisation -- DGFI -- visited Pakistan on August 15 in what would signal repeated attempts by ISI to influence the intelligence body and expand its footprints along India's Eastern Neighbourhood.

The team, was led by Colonel Magfuz-ul-Bari, and comprised Wing Commander Imrul Kais, Mohiuddin Mohammad Asif, Squadron Leader Raihan Mohammad Chowdhury, Murad Hossain Tushar and Khandokar Ariful Islam.

DGFI Director General Major General Qaiser Rashid Chowdhury previously visited Islamabad in April 2026, continuing a thaw in Bangladesh-Pakistan military and intelligence relations following political shifts in Dhaka. Last year an DGFI delegation visited Pakistan under different passport numbers.

Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024, the Pakistan Army and ISI have made inroads into the Bangladesh security establishment with regular visits to Dhaka and vice versa. The election of Tareque Rahman government did not put any brakes on ISI inroads into Bangladesh and the hardliners in the ruling party and Jamaat-e-Islami are influencing his India policy.

In New Delhi MEA spokesperson said, “India desires positive, constructive and forward-looking relations with Bangladesh based on mutuality of interests and reciprocity. Our position on the press conference by former PM needs no repetition. On the issue of extraditions, our consistent position has been that these requests are being examined as part of our established processes.”
