Sheikh Hasina going to London for asylum in UK? Here's what Britain's Foreign Secretary said
The UK has called for a United Nations-led investigation into the recent crisis in Bangladesh that led to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure. Foreign Secretary David Lammy stressed the need for an independent inquiry into the...

Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated, "The people of Bangladesh deserve a full and independent UN-led investigation into the events of the past few weeks. The UK wants to see action taken to ensure Bangladesh a peaceful and democratic future. The UK and Bangladesh have deep people-to-people links and shared Commonwealth values." He highlighted the "unprecedented levels of violence and tragic loss of life" witnessed in the last two weeks and called for all sides to "work together to end the violence, restore calm, deescalate the situation and prevent any further loss of life."
Sheikh Hasina’s Resignation and Departure
Sheikh Hasina, who had led Bangladesh for 15 years, resigned yesterday amid escalating protests led by students. The demonstrations, initially sparked by opposition to a controversial job quota system, had grown into broader anti-government unrest. Following her resignation, Hasina fled to India, with speculation arising about her potential asylum request in the UK. However, Lammy’s statement did not address these asylum rumors.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson expressed deep sadness over the violence in Bangladesh. The spokesperson stated, "We hope that swift action is taken to ensure that democracy prevails and accelerate the process towards peace and security for people in Bangladesh." The spokesperson’s comments followed reports of celebrations in east London, a significant Bangladeshi community hub, where the news of Hasina’s resignation was met with mixed reactions.
Bangladesh Protest
Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman has announced a transitional period and the establishment of an interim government to address the crisis. Meanwhile, reports suggest Hasina’s plane is being prepared for a potential journey to London, although there has been no formal comment from the UK government regarding her asylum request.
