WASHINGTON: The United States has raised the security threat level of its military bases after FBI's claim of thousands of online ISIS followers in the US.

We have raised the security threat level of our military bases as there are thousands of online ISIS followers in the US, FBI Director, James Comey, said.

An order regarding the increased threat level was signed by Admiral William Gortney, head of the US Northern Command.

"We have the same concern about the potential threat posed by violent homegrown extremists," said Captain Jeff Davis, spokesman for the US Northern Command or NORTHCOM.

CNN reported that the force protection level has been raised to Bravo, which also applies to all National Guard installations, recruiting stations, and ROTC detachments.

"We are doing this as a prudent measure due to a lot of things in the news lately," Davis told the CNN.

"While this change is not tied to a specific credible threat, recent events have led us to recognize the need to take prudent steps to ensure that our security measures can be increased quickly," he added.

The move has come after two men attempted to storm an exhibition on Sunday showing caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in a Dallas suburb. The two heavily-armed gunmen were shot dead by a local police officer before they could approach the building where the event was being held.
