Speaking at a Moscow forum on future technologies, Putin stated, "We have come very close to the creation of so-called cancer vaccines and immunomodulatory drugs of a new generation. I hope that soon they will be effectively used as methods of individual therapy."
Putin did not specify the types of cancer these vaccines would target or their exact mechanisms.
Various countries and companies, including the UK government and Germany-based BioNTech, are actively working on cancer vaccines. The UK government's agreement with BioNTech aims to launch clinical trials for personalized cancer treatments, potentially benefiting 10,000 patients by 2030.
Pharmaceutical giants Moderna and Merck & Co are developing an experimental cancer vaccine showing promising results. A mid-stage study revealed that this vaccine halved the chance of recurrence or death from melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, after three years of treatment.
Currently, six licensed vaccines target human papillomaviruses (HPV), which are linked to several cancers, including cervical cancer. Additionally, vaccines against hepatitis B (HBV), which can cause liver cancer, are available.
Amid Russia's development and global distribution of the Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine, Putin emphasized the safety and efficacy of vaccines. He personally took the Sputnik V vaccine to assure the public of its reliability.
