MOSCOW: Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday that U.S. President Joe Biden's mental state had been the main story of this week's NATO summit, and the U.S. "deep state" and media had long hidden his true condition from the public.

Zakharova told reporters that said those who wanted to portray Biden as competent had only worsened the situation.

She was speaking after Biden misspoke on Thursday and introduced Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as "President Putin" before correcting himself.

In an earlier social media post, Zakharova jokingly called Biden "a pro-Russian candidate being controlled by the Kremlin".
