The Metropolitan Police and Crown Prosecution Service have revealed the way detectives managed to collect all the evidence.
How did police build the Russell Brand case?
The Metropolitan Police initiated investigations following allegations against Brand that were aired on Channel 4 Dispatches, The Times, and The Sunday Times in September 2023. The police assigned a task force to evaluate allegations and assist women who had contacted them.As stated by the Met, police investigators were able to trace and interview over 100 witnesses, take more than 400 witness statements, and examine more than 1,400 documents.

However, the importance of this investigation was not in the numbers but in how detectives tied all pieces together.
Timelines were prepared, and floor plans and photographs of the locations related to the claims were acquired. The locations include an old address of Brand and a previous place of work.
The goal was to cross-check the claims with the facts available and verify whether the various pieces of evidence corroborate or contradict the witness statements.
Why was investigating the allegations so difficult?
Another difficulty faced in the case was the issue of time. The accusations on which the convictions were based related to incidents occurring between 2004 and 2009, hence making it difficult for the investigating authorities to investigate incidents that occurred several years before the police investigation started.
The Metropolitan Police stated there was no CCTV or forensic evidence for any of the alleged incidents. The digital investigations would also be hampered due to the passage of time.

This does not mean that the investigators did not have any evidence to analyse.
Rather, the investigators had to reconstruct the incidents through witness statements and other materials that could assist in determining when and where the encounters occurred.
As per the Crown Prosecution Service, the prosecutors concentrated on providing the jury with a picture of behaviour through the complainants' statements and witness testimony.
What did detectives examine beyond witness statements?
The investigation not only included interviews with people who knew Brand.Hundreds of hours of his stand-up shows, TV appearances, interviews, and podcasts were examined by the police. Moreover, detectives also analysed the books written by Brand.
Such material provided the detectives with the opportunity to create timetables and evaluate both witness testimony and Brand's explanations given in response to the questioning by the police.
Moreover, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that Brand was interviewed on four occasions.
In each case, detectives showed him the detailed descriptions of the allegations, and he claimed that he did not know the women who made the allegations, and police spent a lot of time checking his claims against the evidence.
In the course of the trial, his story was changed. According to the police's version of the investigation, prosecutors characterised his memory as "selective memory".
The analysis of his public appearance and literary works represents one of the aspects of historical investigations, where materials which were created much earlier than the complaint can be helpful in the process of investigation.
Was Russell Brand found guilty of every charge?
On November 5, 2026, the jury convicted Brand of one rape count and three sexual assault counts. He was also acquitted of two rape counts and one charge of attempted indecent assault. The convictions arose in connection with four victims and occurred between the years 2004 and 2009. Brand denied the accusations, arguing that his sexual encounters with the victims were consensual.
He was then taken into custody after the conviction. The judge made it clear that Brand would receive a lengthy jail term following his sentencing on November 9, 2026.
The above is not the end of all police investigations related to Brand.
Two more rape charges are currently under investigation by the Metropolitan Police in addition to the ones ruled on by the jury. The above charges have led to no convictions.
What the investigation reveals about historical cases
This case of Russell Brand highlights why an investigation of an offence committed years back may involve a lot of effort. If CCTV cameras, forensic evidence, and computer records cannot be obtained by the investigators, they will have to depend on witnesses and retrace events based on whatever record is available to them.
The most important aspect of this case is that the number of documents or interviews does not determine a case. It is determined by the extent to which the evidence is tested, compared and presented.
In this case, it led to four guilty verdicts, while Brand was acquitted in three others.
