In a statement released after Putin and Trump's telephonic conversation, the Kremlin said that the two leaders had a “detailed and frank exchange of views” on the situation in Ukraine.
Putin told Trump that any resolution of the conflict must be “comprehensive, sustainable, and long-term,” taking into account Russia’s security interests and addressing the root causes of the war.
Russia has carried out a series of severe attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure during the last three years.
According Russia, Ukraine, which has targeted several Russian oil installations amidst Moscow's war, has agreed to a truce on energy strikes, though Kyiv is yet to comment.
Kremlin’s conditions for truce
The phone call between Putin and Trump also focused on a U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine had agreed to in the previous week. While the Kremlin confirmed Russia’s agreement on the need for an end to the conflict, it noted that President Putin raised "significant points" about how to monitor such a truce and prevent Ukraine from using the pause to mobilize additional troops or rearm itself.
“It was emphasized that the key condition for preventing the escalation of the conflict and working towards its resolution by political and diplomatic means should be a complete cessation of foreign military assistance and the provision of intelligence information to Kyiv,” the Kremlin statement read.
