William Henry Harrison delivered the longest inaugural address, in 8,445 words, on March 4, 1841 — a bitterly cold, wet day. He died one month later of pneumonia, believed to have been brought on by prolonged exposure to the elements on his Inauguration Day.
The first inauguration, that of George Washington, took place on April 30, 1789. All subsequent (regular) inaugurations from 1793 to 1933 were held on March 4. Inauguration Day moved to January 20, beginning 1937, following a ratification of the Twentieth Amendment to US Constitution.
The inaugurations of William Howard Taft in 1909 and Ronald Reagan in 1985 were moved inside the Capitol because of cold, wintry weather.
