Popular Bangladeshi actor Shanto Khan and father Selim Khan lynched by a mob

Popular actor Shanto Khan and his father, Selim Khan, were reportedly lynched by a mob in Chandpur on Monday night. The incident reportedly occurred amid rising tensions following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation. Selim Khan, a well-known owner of a Bangladeshi production house, was a loyalist of Sheikh Hasina. Reports indicate that he faced violence as an expelled member of the Awami League after Hasina fled the country. His production house produced several hit films, including 'Tungi Parar Miya Bhai' and 'Commando'.

Shanto Khan's Career

Shanto Khan, Selim's son, was an emerging actor. He debuted in the film 'Prem Chor' in 2019 and later starred in 'Piya Re' (2021), 'Bubujaan' (2023), and 'Anto Nagar' (2024).

Actor-director Parambrata Chatterjee expressed his shock at the killings, having collaborated on multiple projects in Bangladesh. Others in the Bengali film industry condemned the lynching but refrained from commenting on the political situation.


Actor Rajatabha Dutta, who worked with Shanto in 'Bikkhov', told PTI, “During our shoot in Chandpur for the movie, he personally took care of my needs. He was attentive to my needs even at the hotel. I do not know how or why he had to die at such a young age when his career was looking up.” However, he did not comment on Bangladesh's current situation, citing it as an internal matter.

Condolances Pour in for Shanto

Condolences have poured in from the film community. Actress Kaushani Mukhopadhyay remembered Shanto for his kindness during the shooting of 'Piya Re'. “I believe in the triumph of humanity and hope the situation will soon turn normal there,” she said.
