Pandemic paralyses Thai shelter for disabled dogs

Safe haven
In Thailand's Chonburi province there is a shelter for stray, disabled dogs that have no one to care for them. Started by a foreigner, the shelter ensures the dogs have wheelchair access and food throughout the year.

Operations
The shelter is run by a foundation called The Man That Rescues Dogs, set up by a Switzerland international in 2002 after he moved to Thailand and saw the abysmal condition of the street dogs there.

Pandemic pause
Ever since the coronavirus pandemic began, donations to the shelter have dropped by 40%, putting the future of many of the furries in doubt.

Expensive affair
To run the shelter - including feeding the dogs and caring for them - everyday costs about $1300. There are 600 dogs at the shelter and 350 outside that need to be fed, as well as physiotherapy for the hurt dogs.

Expanding populace
As of 2017, Thailand was estimated to have 8,00,000 stray cats and dogs, a number that’s growing and expected to reach two million by 2027, unless there are concentrated programmes, like the foundation’s spaying and neutering one that had to be stopped due to a lack of funds.
