Pakistan’s role in Balochistan questioned in US Congress meet
NEW DELHI: A first of its kind conference organised in the US Congress last week highlighted alleged human rights violation in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, a development that is sure to raise eyebrows in Islamabad.

Held on July 22, it was hosted by US Congressman Chris Smith of New Jersey, chairman of the foreign affairs subcommittee of the US Congress.

Among other prominent speakers at the meet were Canadian MP Russ Hiebert, Italian Member of the European Parliament (MEP), noted author Pakistan’s Role in Balochistan Questioned in US Cong Meet Tarek Fatah, and Baloch leader and activist Mehran Baluch. The conference may be the first step of a process to highlight in the US the issue of Baloch subjugation in Pakistan.

Smith announced that a meeting of the foreign affairs subcommittee will be held shortly to hear expert witnesses who will testify on the issue of “ethnic and religious minority rights in Pakistan”.

Hiebert highlighted the alleged injustice and oppression faced by the people of Balochistan at the hands of their own government. He also spoke at length on the methods allegedly used by the Pakistan army to torture activists and leaders of the minority groups in Balochistan.
