Pakistan suffered 50,000 deaths, $ 80 billion losses in war on terror

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan lost at least 50,000 lives and a whopping $ 80 billion in its fight against terror in over a decade, the parliament was told today.

In 2001, Pakistan joined the US-led war on terror and is still fighting militancy.

The Express Tribune reported the National Assembly was informed about "losses of $ 80 billion and 50,000 lives in the war on terror over the last 10 years."

The paper did not provide details of financial losses. Quoting Parliamentary Secretary for Interior Maryam Aurangzeb, it said that the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control recorded at least 11,285 were killed in the last five years alone.

"More than 28,561 people sustained injuries in various blasts in the past five years," she is quoted by the paper as saying.

The interior secretary further said that extremist groups have been active throughout the country with their own ideologies during the last 10 years.

Lawmaker Shaikh Salauddin has sought details of estimated losses to Pakistan in its struggle against terrorism.
