Trump has once again courted Field Marshal Asim Munir to assist him on the Iran impasse. There are reports that Munir has spoken with Trump over the last weekend and has pitched Pakistan as the venue for possible “US-Iran” talks.

Pakistan is reportedly relaying messages between Iran and USA to end the war and seek favours in return, it has been learnt. Interestingly, Islamabad had earlier allowed its territory and airspace to be used by the USA for attacking Iran. While Pakistan and Iran maintain cordial ties, trust between Pakistan and Iran remains low over sectarian and boundary matters.
Iran’s foreign ministry denied any direct negotiations with the US since the conflict began, but said several regional countries were involved in mediation efforts.
Meanwhile, Islamabad remains non-committal on assisting Saudi Arabia in countering Iran despite the defence pact and claimed that its military is heavily engaged along the Afghan border, ET had reported last Sunday.
Last June during the strikes against Iran, Pakistan had tried to emerge as a peacemaker between the USA and Iran in the backdrop of chemistry between Trump and Munir.

Pakistan has tried since last year to emerge as the US lynchpin for South Asia.
In fact it is the turnaround in the US-Pak ties at least in the short term that has caught global attention. Trump has heaped praises on Field Marshal and has hailed PM Shahbaz Sharif several times as the duo gave the American leader the role of a peacemaker following the Operation Sindoor.
