The 2025 Nobel Prize announcements started on Monday, with the medicine prize being announced by a panel at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

Officially known as the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the honour has been awarded 115 times to 229 Nobel Prize laureates between 1901 and 2024.

Nobel announcements continued with the physics prize on Tuesday, chemistry prize on Wednesday, followed by literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize was also announced on Friday, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in economics was announced on October 13.

The award ceremony will be held on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, who founded the prizes. Nobel was a wealthy Swedish industrialist and the inventor of dynamite. He died in 1896.

Each Nobel Prize can be shared by up to three laureates. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, with the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences being introduced later in 1969.

Since 1901, the Nobel Prizes and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences have been awarded 621 times to over 1,000 individuals and organizations. Each laureate receives a gold medal featuring an image of Alfred Nobel. The reverse side of the medal varies depending on the awarding institution. The Nobel Prize diplomas are also unique works of art, with the literature diploma traditionally written on parchment, using techniques similar to those employed by medieval illustrators.
