‘My kids saw everyone making fun of me’: Katie Zacharia breaks silence after five-day White House stint, recalls ‘tough night’
Katie Zacharia shared her whirlwind experience as White House press secretary, a role she held for just five days. Following her first press briefing, the backlash and online criticism were overwhelming. However, she highlighted her commitment to ...

US President Donald Trump has fired the newly-appointed White House press secretary Katie Zacharia from her role just one week after her hiring was announced. “I said to Katie just two minutes ago, I said, Katie, you know, you don't have to do this ... the news has been so nasty to her. I've never seen anything like it. And I said, I said to her honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider. You think about it, but I wouldn't reconsider. She's got a beautiful husband and family,” Trump said moments before she was fired.
Zacharia's departure on October 16 followed an intense online backlash after her first press briefing, during which she became the subject of widespread criticism and memes.
‘It was a tough night’
Zacharia recalled the final night of her tenure, which came a day after her eldest son's birthday. She said a dinner with Vice President JD Vance made her realise the seriousness of the situation.“It was a tough night,” she said.
Despite the criticism surrounding her departure, Zacharia said maintaining her character throughout the ordeal was more important than how others viewed her performance.
“What I will mark is that maintaining your character, no matter the circumstances, for me, is what defined the entire process,” she told the Post.
She added that the experience could serve as a lesson for her children about the importance of integrity and loyalty.
“What they witnessed was a mother standing strong while she’s an international meme, or when everyone’s making fun of her, including people who we thought would be on our side. If… I went through that entire thing only to teach my kids to have integrity and to have loyalty, then I think it was worth it,” she told The Post
Zacharia says she had little time to prepare for briefing
Zacharia also defended her performance during her first and only press briefing, saying she had received “only a few hours of actual briefing material” before facing reporters. Her debut drew widespread attention online, with clips and memes fuelling criticism of her brief stint in the administration.
According to the account, former White House press secretaries Kayleigh McEnany, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Ari Fleischer and Sean Spicer reached out to offer support. They reportedly acknowledged the limited time she had to prepare for the briefing.
Zacharia also rejected speculation that internal favouritism had secured her the position. She maintained that President Donald Trump had personally selected her, citing her experience with television appearances and early-morning cable news programmes.
Trump's advice after White House exit
Reflecting on her departure, Zacharia recalled Trump's response: “You know, there are other ways to make a living.”Her exit was followed by security concerns, with reports of unwanted visitors and people described as stalkers appearing in her neighbourhood. Neighbours reportedly stepped in to help protect her family's privacy.
Despite the controversy, Zacharia said she intended to remain a vocal supporter of Trump while pursuing opportunities outside the executive branch.
“I vow to remain an outspoken Trump ally from outside the executive branch,” she said.
