Multiple persons including police officer shot in Louisiana

HOUSTON: Multiple persons including a police officer have been shot in Sunset suburb in southeastern US state of Louisiana.

According to local media, a law enforcement source said the suspected shooter is barricaded inside a mini-mart and a standoff is underway.

Law enforcement is responding to reports that multiple people and an officer have been shot in Sunset in southwestern Louisiana.

State police Superintendent Mike Edmonson says troopers are on the way to the scene in Sunset, about 70 miles west of capital Baton Rouge, after getting a call around 4:45 pm, local time Wednesday.

Sunset police confirmed that one of their officers was shot.

Edmonson said the shooting reportedly took place near a convenience store.

He said the officer was "responsive" but he has no details on the extent of the officer's injuries -- or those of the other two people who were shot.

Some victims have been transported to a hospital. The officer was transported via helicopter to a hospital.

Several ambulances and helicopters are in the area and there may be "multiple scenes."

Tonette Thibodeaux of the Sunset Police Department confirmed that an officer was shot but says, she does not have any further details.
