Morocco pitches itself as India's gateway to Europe and Africa

New Delhi: Morocco, a key supplier of phosphates to India, is positioning itself as a gateway for Indian defence, automotive and aerospace industries to Europe and Africa, enabling India to derisk from various markets and complement India-EU free trade pact.

Recently ranked as Africa's leading industrial economy by the African Development Bank Group, Morocco is seeking collaboration with India across key sectors.

"For Indian businesses, Morocco offers a strategic gateway to European and African markets, supported by modern industrial platforms and extensive trade partnerships," Morocco's ambassador to India Mohamed Maliki told ET. "The complementarities between our two economies create significant opportunities for collaboration in key sectors, including automotive, aerospace, green technologies and logistics."


He said that Morocco's recognition as Africa's leading industrial nation in the 2025 Africa Industrialization Index reflects the strategic leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and that the country transformed into a competitive industrial hub as a result of decades of sustained efforts, ambitious national strategies and investments.

Morocco has become Africa's largest automotive exporter and one of the fastest-growing production hubs globally. It offers a rare combination of proximity to Europe, access to African markets and long-term policy continuity, according to Maliki, who is also the dean of African and Arab ambassadors in India.

At the centre of Morocco's strategy lies Tanger Med Port - connected to more than 180 ports globally and capable of delivering components to southern Europe within 24-48 hours.
