Mob attacks police cars amid Philadelphia street races, Elon Musk jokes 'looks like a scene from Joker'

Philadelphia saw a night of unrest as police officers were attacked while attempting to disperse multiple illegal car gatherings across the city on Saturday night. The gatherings, which involved more than 200 cars, led to clashes with the police, vehicle vandalism, and widespread disorder. The chaos, which spanned over seven hours, unfolded in various locations, leaving police officers struggling to maintain control.

Illegal Meetups and Vandalism Across Philadelphia

The illegal gatherings, scattered throughout the city, saw drivers blocking major intersections and setting off firecrackers. Some individuals even built bonfires and, in a startling display of recklessness, used a flamethrower. The Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that a total of 12 illegal meetups took place during the night, with one of the largest gatherings involving over 50 vehicles.

Footage from social media showed scenes of disorder, including a white car swerving down a Philadelphia street in front of a police vehicle. Crowds of people, some dressed in fancy costumes and wearing masks, surrounded the police car, with some individuals climbing on top of it. In a separate incident, video footage captured a mob pulling open the door of a police SUV as tensions escalated.


Philadelphia Police faced significant challenges throughout the night as participants quickly moved from one location to another. Deputy Commissioner Mike Cram commented on the difficulty of controlling the gatherings, saying, “It’s playing whack-a-mole, that’s the best way to describe it. We hit them at one location, they move to another very quickly.”

Police Efforts to Contain the Situation

In response to the chaos, Philadelphia Police deployed “dozens of officers” to try and break up the gatherings. Despite their efforts, the police acknowledged that they could not stop all the meetups. “Unfortunately, law enforcement cannot prevent all of them, and even when we have the information, safely stopping the events in their tracks is not immediately feasible due to risks to officer and citizen safety,” the police department said.

During the confrontations, an arrest warrant was issued for a motorist who tried to flee by driving directly at officers. The driver also collided with a civilian vehicle during the escape attempt. In total, nine drivers and 15 spectators were issued nuisance citations for their participation in the illegal events.

Political Reactions and Law Enforcement Response

The disorder caught the attention of prominent political figures. The House Judiciary Committee Republicans posted a video of the incident on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, “You’re not safe in Democrat-run Philadelphia.” The video, which showed police vehicles being attacked, quickly gained traction. Elon Musk also reacted to the footage, writing, “Pretty sure I saw this scene in The Joker.”


Deputy Commissioner Francis Healy addressed the violence against officers, attributing it to the department’s recent crackdown on illegal car meetups, particularly under the administration of Mayor Parker. “This behaviour will not be tolerated. We firmly believe that the actions last night were in retaliation [to] the police department’s aggressive actions that we’ve been taking since Mayor Parker’s administration began,” Healy said during a press conference.

Healy also issued a stern warning to those involved in the illegal gatherings. “We have your picture. We’re coming for you. If you think you got away last night, you didn’t,” he said. “We’re coming with search warrants, and we’re coming with arrest warrants, so don’t think we’re going to lay down and allow this to happen in our city.”

The city of Philadelphia has seen an increase in illegal car meetups in recent months. These gatherings, often involving dangerous stunts and reckless driving, have drawn concern from both law enforcement and residents. The gatherings are part of a growing trend of illegal street racing and car stunts across the United States, which has led to public safety risks and clashes with law enforcement.
