Hall-of-Famer and legendary coach Mike Ditka died at age 86, according to his family. Ditka died just over a week shy of what would have been his 87th birthday on October 18. “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka,” his family said in a statement. “While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family. “Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever.”

Nicknamed "Iron Mike" for his toughness, Mike Ditka rose from a standout athlete in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, to become a legendary NFL player and coach. In 1965, a foot injury affected his walking, and in 1984, he underwent right hip replacement surgery followed by a left hip replacement in 1992. Later reports also mentioned additional hip procedures. He was seen walking with a noticeable limp in his later years.

Ditka, while coaching the New Orleans Saints, underwent cardioversion, a process that uses controlled electrical shocks to restore a normal heart rhythm. This happened in 1999. He was hospitalized briefly and recovered quickly.

As a coach, Ditka was a two-time Super Bowl champion and a two-time NFL Coach of the Year, in 1985 and 1988.
