First dog to reach 30 years
Ever wondered what it would be like if our dogs stayed with us a while longer? Well for Leonel Costa, from Central Portugal, this is very much a reality. His dog, Bobi, was born 3 decades ago, becoming the longest-living dog in the present day.

Guinness World of Records
Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, celebrated his 30th birthday last year and Costa got in touch with the Guinness World of Records and submitted all the paperwork. A year later Bobi was officially named the oldest dog on record. Bobi was 30 years and 269 days old as of Feb. 4.

Life expectancy (12-14 years)
Bobi's breed usually has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years and Costa attributed its longevity to a number of factors, including living in calm countryside, never having been chained or kept on a leash and always eating "human food".

One of a kind
Even though time has taken its toll on Bobi, and he has trouble walking and worsening eyesight, Costa described him as the “last of a long generation of animals” in the family and called him “one of a kind”.

Previous record breaker
The record was previously held by an Australian dog named Bluey, who died in 1939 aged 29 years and five months.
