Md Yunus regime accused of creating fake list of martyrs of July 2024 Bangladesh "uprising"

Shocking revelations from Bangladesh's “July 2024 uprising” that ousted then PM Sheikh Hasina through street protests have come to the forefront with the previous interim Yunus regime producing an inflated list of martyrs due to the protests to defame the Awami League government.

The “July Martyrs Gazette” published by the Yunus led regime allegedly contains names of several individuals who died of natural causes or accidents days after Hasina was ousted from power, claimed an investigation conducted by a group of retired police officers and independent journalists.

The list includes names of several deceased individuals who had no connection with anti-quota protests and unrest that unseated the Hasina government, the investigation alleged. The probe alleged that the goal of the martyrs list was to hold the Hasina government responsible for a large number of deaths in police action in July 2024.


The Hasina government had come under intense scrutiny globally for the casualties during the July 2024 uprising. Sources from Dhaka who did not wish to be identified told ET that numbers of “martyrs” have been inflated by the erstwhile reasons for political reasons.

Nearly 300 Bangladeshi citizens who died during the tenure of the interim regime after August 5, 2024, for various unrelated reasons, were included in the July Martyrs Gazette, to blame the previous Awami League government.

The gazette allegedly includes names of individuals who died in road accidents, of electrocution, sudden heart attack, kidney failure, property disputes, mob violence, prison attacks among other reasons.

The investigation claims that the goal of the Yunus regime was to lengthen the July Martyrs Gazette to blame Hasina, the Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League and affiliated organisations as being responsible for a much larger number of victims than in reality.

It may be recalled that the Hasina government was ousted through student protests that were allegedly backed by Islamists and radical forces with support from abroad.
