The reports suggest that up to 40 rounds of gunfire were heard and an explosion also took place at a building in Brighton.

NEW DELHI: Victoria Police have resolved a hostage situation at an apartment block in Brighton, said the police in a statement.

A man has been shot dead by police in the Bay Street apartment complex. "Police have safely rescued a woman who was being held against her will in the apartment block. Three police members have sustained non-life threatening injuries during the arrest - two have been taken to hospital and one was treated on scene. Another man was earlier located deceased with a gunshot wound in the lobby of the serviced apartment building," said the police.

Police are investigating whether the incident is terrorism related.

Earlier, there were reports of up to 40 rounds of gunfire and an explosion at the building in Brighton.
