What did Laura Owens do?
Laura Owens attracted widespread attention in 2023 after claiming that Echard had fathered twins with her following a brief encounter. Echard denied the claim, and Owens later said she had miscarried and withdrew her paternity lawsuit. Investigators say Laura Owens went to "extreme lengths to manipulate men," including Clayton Echard, who was a contestant on season 18 of "The Bachelorette" before being selected to star as "The Bachelor" in season 26 of the reality TV show.ALSO READ: Why are Android phones showing Google Play system update dated January 2027? Investigators subsequently alleged that Owens fabricated evidence to support her pregnancy claims. They said she altered an ultrasound image, created a fake pregnancy video and made false statements under oath during court proceedings. The investigation also uncovered allegations involving Gregory Gillespie, a man she had dated in 2021.

What did Laura Owens say in court?
During her October 23 sentencing hearing, Owens apologized to the men involved in the case and acknowledged the impact of her actions. “I pleaded guilty to four felonies, and I am profoundly, profoundly sorry for the pain, distress and expense that I've caused them,” Owens told the judge.“I want the rest of my life, and not just my words today, to show how completely, terribly sorry I am for everybody I've harmed,” Owens said during the hearing.
Echard, however, questioned whether her apology reflected genuine remorse. Speaking to the court, he said he believed she was sorry only because she had been caught.
“Her tears aren't from empathy, they're not. She doesn't feel sorry. She's just sorry she got caught,” Echard said. Echard argued that Owens should receive jail time, saying he believed she could continue harming others if she was not removed from her current environment. He also described the emotional toll of the years-long legal dispute.
What did Laura Owens' parents say?
Owens' parents also addressed the court and asked the judge to consider her personal circumstances when determining her sentence. Her father, Ronn Owens, expressed his love for his daughter while asking the court not to impose a lengthy period of incarceration.“I love my daughter more than I can put into words,” Ronn Owens told the court. He also pleaded with the judge not to take her away for whatever time he had left.
“She has been pregnant. She has had verified medical proof of pregnancy. She has been abused. She has been suffocated and strangled by men she has been with,” Jan Owens said.
A judge handed down a sentence of 30 days in jail, with seven years of probation, to Laura Owens on Oct. 23. If she violates her probation, she could face up to 12 years in jail.
