Joni Mitchell’s former Malibu home: What is on offer?
The home was designed for Mitchell in 1982 by Malibu architect Ron Goldman. Situated on Malibu Road in Malibu, California, the Cape Cod-inspired residence spans approximately 4,016 square feet and sits on a lot of around 0.26 acres. It has five bedrooms, five bathrooms and direct access to the beach.
The property is currently being offered by a subsequent owner who purchased it from Mitchell. Its layout features large glass walls overlooking the Pacific Ocean, an open living and dining area, an ocean-facing primary suite with a private balcony and a detached guest house. These features give the property both luxury appeal and a connection to the singer's personal history.
Why the beachfront pool is attracting attention
One of the property's biggest selling points is its swimming pool and spa, positioned just steps from the beach. The features are described as grandfathered under earlier coastal development rules, making them particularly unusual in Malibu, where current regulations can make similar construction difficult.
Listing agent Joyce Rey of Coldwell Banker Realty told People that the pool and spa would be “extraordinarily difficult to recreate under today's coastal regulations.” The pool area also has a glass railing that preserves views of the ocean, giving the outdoor space an uninterrupted coastal outlook.
The rarity of these amenities helps explain the property's appeal beyond its celebrity connection. Buyers are being offered a beachfront home with existing features that may be difficult to reproduce in a new development.
What happened to the $27 million asking price?
Although the home initially entered the market at $26.995 million in late May 2026, its asking price was reduced by about $2 million in August. Realtor.com reported on August 30 that the property was then listed at $24.9 million. The listing remained active at that price in records updated on October 14.The reduction is an important detail for prospective buyers and readers following the story. While the original $27 million figure attracted attention when the property first went on sale, the latest available listing information points to a lower asking price.
