A JetBlue flight from New York to San Diego made an emergency landing on Saturday evening due to concerns over potential smoke or fire in the cargo area. The aircraft descended rapidly from 36,000 feet to 4,250 feet in under ten minutes and safely landed at Salina Regional Airport in Kansas.

Passengers recounted the experience on social media. One passenger described the descent as an "absolute plummet" on Reddit, adding, "Pilot came to talk to us maybe 90 minutes after we landed and said they don’t know if there was any fire or smoke, but since the suppression system was deployed, that plane has to go to Boston to get checked out and can’t carry passengers. They left with the crew."

Another passenger mentioned the landing at the small airport, stating, "They got us safely to the ground in the literal middle of nowhere KS. Tiny airport. Emergency exit on the tarmac. The airport is so small, they actually got the local school bus drivers to come and bring us from the tarmac to the terminal."

Details emerged that a sensor had indicated smoke in the cargo bay, though no fire was found on the ground. A passenger noted hearing a loud bang during the descent, describing it as, "That was a fast drop… No fire found once on the ground. Now just the logistics of a stranded flight and need for a new plane."

No injuries were reported from the incident. The specific cause of the sensor alert remains undetermined, and the plane will undergo further inspection in Boston.
