Iran CJ seeks action over war crimes, sovereignty violations

New Delhi: Iran's Chief Justice Ayatollah Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i Saturday called for stronger international action against those responsible for what Tehran described as violations of its sovereignty, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

Also speaking at the BRICS Chief Justices' Forum, Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant proposed a common BRICS platform for arbitration and mediation to resolve cross-border commercial disputes.

The head of Iran's judiciary called on BRICS member states to uphold the rule of law and take a firm stand against aggression, violations of national sovereignty and international crimes, making a pointed reference to military strikes by Israel and the US against his country earlier this year.


Mohseni-Eje'I said justice shouldn't be selective or shaped by political considerations or the relative power of countries. He stressed respect for international law, national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and said no country should regard itself as being above the law.

"BRICS has an increasingly important role in shaping the emerging global order," he said. "We seek an order in which no power considers itself above the law," he said, calling upon BRICS members to "stand with the law".
