The cricket tournament which was launched in 2008 will have its 17th edition this year and will also be called the Tata IPL for sponsorship reasons. Star Sports along with Viacom 18 bought the IPL media rights for the period of 2023-2027 for $6.4 billion. It means these companies will pay $13.4 million to the IPL for each match.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India or BCCI and the International Cricket Council or ICC did not recognize the Indian Cricket League or the ICL, founded by Zee Entertainment Enterprises in 2007. Instead, the BCCI launched its franchisee-based T20 cricket tournament and named it IPL.
