Indonesia has strived hard to find a middle ground amid geopolitical tensions ahead of the next week’s G-20 Summit and is hopeful that a joint communique could be issued at end of proceedings, according Indonesian envoy to India Ina H Krisnamurti, Indonesian envoy to India.

“Logistically, we are hoping for a smooth run of the summit. Substance wise, we also hope to have a joint communique. Substantial outcomes will be achieved upholding the principle of G-20. If a joint communique cannot be achieved, there will be a document outlining outcomes of the summit. Indonesia has strived hard to achieve a middle ground,” Krisnamurti told ET ahead of the summit.

The envoy also pointed out that PM Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Joko Widodo will hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit and this will give further momentum to the strategic partnership.

With India holding the G-20 presidency next year, the trio of Indonesia-India-Brazil (G-20 presidency in 2024) will be that of emerging economies. “This will mark the emergence of emerging economies along with Egypt holding COP27,” the envoy noted.

Understanding the challenges and the need for collective action, Indonesia will continue to focus on the three main pillars of its G-20 presidency namely: global health architecture, sustainable energy transition, and digital transformation, the envoy said . Through these pillars, Indonesia will continue to take the lead in ensuring equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines, promoting sustainable and inclusive economic development through MSME participation and digital economy.

She said this will be done while maintaining the aspiration to continue to improve our collective capacity in securing the shared prosperity among nations, through various reform efforts in global taxation, stronger cooperation in fighting corruption, deepening of infrastructure financing, and pushing for a more democratic and representative international cooperation.
