The Consulate is actively engaged with the family and is providing all possible assistance. Although details of the incident have not been disclosed, the Consulate remains in close contact with the family, who has been informed of the tragedy. Benigeri's father is expected to arrive in the US from India soon.
"Deeply saddened by the unfortunate demise of Mr. Shreyas Reddy Benigeri, a student of Indian origin in Ohio. Police investigation is underway. At this stage, foul play is not suspected. The Consulate continues to remain in touch with the family and is extending all possible assistance to them," the Consulate said on social media platform X.
This incident follows closely on the heels of two other tragic deaths of Indian students in the US in a span of a week. Vivek Saini, a 25-year-old Indian student, was fatally attacked in Lithonia city, Georgia, just days before Benigeri's death. Saini was assaulted by a homeless drug addict. Another student, Neel Acharya, who was pursuing a double major at Purdue University, was found dead near the university airport. The circumstances surrounding Acharya's death are yet to be disclosed, and the Consulate General of India in Chicago has assured support to the family.
Last month, 18-year-old Akul B Dhawan at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was found dead with signs of hypothermia last month. Dhawan had gone missing in the early hours of January 20 and was discovered almost 10 hours later on the back porch of a building near the university campus.
