“I spoke to PM Modi, he is excited about the Gaza peace plan,” Trump said referring to his administration’s newly formed “Board of Peace.”
Trump’s remarks came as the first meeting of the Trump-led Board of Peace was held in Washington. India participated in the meeting as an observer country, days after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the US President’s offer to join the group was under consideration.
Namgya C Khampa, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington, represented New Delhi at the meeting, which took place at the US Institute of Peace. Nearly 50 countries attended the discussions, with 27 nations formally joining the initiative.
Member countries include Azerbaijan, Belarus, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. India and the European Union attended as observers.
What is the Board of Peace?
The Board of Peace is an international body chaired by Trump and was proposed as part of his administration’s “Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict,” a 20-point roadmap aimed at post-war governance, reconstruction and long-term stability in Gaza following the Israel-Hamas war.
Around 60 countries have reportedly been approached as part of Washington’s outreach to broaden participation in the Board of Peace.
