Trump was responding to concerns raised by his allies about his close ties with Loomer, a far-right activist known for her inflammatory remarks and conspiracy theories. "I don’t control Laura. She’s a free spirit," Trump added, distancing himself from her actions. "She’s strong and has strong opinions, but that’s not up to me."
Loomer recently faced backlash for a social media post alluding to a conspiracy theory surrounding the 9/11 attacks. In one post, she questioned the official explanation of the events, referencing a video of Trump in 2001, where he also expressed doubts about the nature of the explosions at the Twin Towers.
In another post, Loomer made a racist comment about Harris, stating, "The White House will smell like curry & White House speeches will be facilitated via a call centre" if she wins the November presidential election.
In a subsequent post on Truth Social, Trump further distanced himself from Loomer, emphasising that she does not work for his campaign and is merely a longtime supporter. However, he continued to defend her, saying, "Like millions of others, she is tired of watching the Radical Left Marxists and Fascists violently attack and smear me."
Republican leaders, including Senator Thom Tillis and Senator Lindsey Graham, have criticised Loomer for her divisive rhetoric. Tillis called Loomer a "crazy conspiracy theorist," while Graham described her history of statements as "beyond disturbing." Despite this, Trump’s defence of Loomer indicates his reluctance to sever ties with a supporter who remains loyal to his campaign.
