What are vaccine passports?
Vaccine passports are similar to digital wallets, used instead to store information about a person’s COVID-19 status - from test results to vaccination dates and temperature scans.

Who’s making them?
As of now, there are multiple projects - the Common’s Project Foundation’s CommonPass, IBM’s Digital Health Pass and International Chamber of Commerce’s (ICC) AOKpass. The WHO is also working on an e-vaccination certificate.

Are they in use?
Currently, Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic and United Airlines are using the CommonPass. As the technology catches up, more and more companies and governments will put them in use.

How secure are they?
IBM’s and ICC’s digital passports are built on blockchain technology - the same stuff used in digital currencies - as well as personal encryption on the user’s end, which makes them relatively safe but then again this technology is still nascent.

Looking ahead
Denmark and Estonia have turned out to be early adopters of vaccine passports, with both countries announcing developments of similar technology but with no word on the final product. It remains to be seen how widespread the idea becomes.
