As per reports, it has jumped as much as 250 times between from Abraham Lincoln to Donald Trump, even after factoring in inflation. As per Investopedia, between 2000 and 2012, campaign spending by the candidates more than quadrupled.

According to the website of US Federal Election Commission, the spending limit for 2020 for publicly-funded general election presidential candidates is $103,701,600. However, the limits are more on donors - candidates cannot raise more than $2800 per election from each donor, according to Fortune.
