How China is set to trump the US on aid

How China is set to trump the US on aid

Highlights

China rivals US, the world's largest donor, in funding offered to other countries between 2000 and 2014, says a report by aiddata.org, with Pakistan and Sri Lanka among the 10 biggest beneficiaries. Here's how US and China have fared so far:
AID DISTRIBUTION
In 15 years, China distributed aid worth $340 billion to 140 countries across six geographic regions. And has covered 4,300 projects.

CHINA STANDS SECOND ONLY TO THE US
* Between 2000-2014, China disbursed $354.3bn in aid.

* 21 per cent of China's spend is on aid or grants, and 79 per cent is in the form of "loans".
* US in the same period distributed $394.6bn.
* 93 per cent of US's total spend is in form of aid, focused on development and welfare.

SUPERPOWER CREDENTIALS
US President Donald Trump has called for deep cuts in what Washington gives in aid to other countries, ceding more space to Beijing, which is raring to become the go-to country for development loans as it seeks to further cement its superpower credentials.
