How age is important in prevention strategy for substance use disorder

The study analysed over 300 articles on abuse, and aimed to find what caused people to abuse drugs. The answers ranged from adverse childhood experiences, trauma, chronic health diseases, environmental factors, family history, social determinants, grief and loss.

However, risk factors varied across ages; for instance, children below 18 took to drugs due to peer pressure and adverse childhood experiences, while young adults - even those without family history - did drugs due to societal pressures and adulthood adversities.

The study suggests that using this data to tailor drug abuse programs for each age group could ultimately lead to better results in drug abuse prevention and possibly ease the need for specialised counsellors.
