The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has temporarily halted the evacuation of ships through the Strait of Hormuz following an attack on a vessel in the Gulf of Oman that had recently transited the strategic waterway, AFP reported on Thursday.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said the suspension was intended to allow authorities to reassess security conditions and ensure adequate safety guarantees for vessels operating in the region.

"I have decided to temporarily pause the implementation of the evacuation plan to verify that the necessary safety assurances remain in place for ships on our evacuation list and for all vessels in the area," he said in a statement, according to AFP.
