In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, "If they do 'assassinate President Trump,' which is always a possibility, I hope that America obliterates Iran, wipes it off the face of the Earth — If that does not happen, American Leaders will be considered 'gutless' cowards!"
Trump's campaign also claimed that Iran intends to destabilize the upcoming US presidential elections. Steven Cheung, Trump's campaign communications director, said in a statement, "President Trump was briefed earlier today by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence regarding real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States."
Cheung added that these attacks have increased over the past few months, and law enforcement agencies are working to protect Trump and ensure a fair election.
Iran has denied allegations of any involvement in a plot to kill Trump earlier this summer. US agencies had reported that Iranian cyber attackers attempted to share stolen Trump campaign information with media outlets, but did not specify which ones. Iran strongly rejected these claims.
Additionally, Kamala Harris's campaign reported on August 13 that it had also been targeted by foreign hackers, though it did not specify the country responsible.
Trump has faced two assassination attempts during his 2024 presidential campaign.
