When ‘Little Boy’ flattened Hiroshima
The United States dropped the bombs after obtaining the consent of the United Kingdom, as required by the Quebec Agreement.
On August 6, one of its B-29s dropped a Little Boy uranium gun-type bomb on Hiroshima.
The bombs immediately devastated their targets. Over the next two to four months, the acute effects of the atomic bombings killed 90,000–146,000 people in Hiroshima.

The aftermath
There were 90,000 buildings in Hiroshima before the bomb was dropped; only 28,000 remained after the bombing. Of the city’s 200 doctors before the explosion; only 20 were left alive or capable of working. There were 1,780 nurses before—only 150 remained who were able to tend to the sick and dying.

The paradoxical peace
Japan announced its surrender to the Allies on August 15, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki and the Soviet Union's declaration of war. On September 2, the Japanese government signed the instrument of surrender, effectively ending World War II.

The Atomic Bomb Dome
The Atomic Bomb Dome was located almost directly underneath the explosion, it somehow avoided complete destruction and the remains of the building still stand today.
