Grand Theft Auto VI may be locked at 30 FPS on PS5, Xbox Series X, Series S and PS5 Pro: Report
Grand Theft Auto VI is set to release on November 19, 2026, exclusively for the latest gaming consoles. There are indications that the game could be limited to 30 FPS, which may impact overall gaming experiences. However, it is expected to showcas...

The report suggests that Rockstar Games is prioritising the game's open-world density, complex physics, crowd simulation and weather effects over higher frame rates. If the reported performance target holds, even PS5 Pro owners may not get a 60 FPS mode at launch.
GTA 6 on PS5: 1440p resolution and 30 FPS?
Digital Foundry's analysis of an extended GTA 6 demo running on the standard PlayStation 5 reportedly found that the game runs at a native resolution of 1440p, which is then upscaled to 4K, at a target of 30 FPS.The analysis also highlighted stable performance, with only minor fluctuations in demanding scenes. The game's graphics reportedly use hardware-accelerated ray tracing for global illumination and realistic reflections.
The PS5 Pro could deliver graphical improvements, including higher resolution and enhanced ray tracing. However, such improvements would not necessarily translate into a higher frame rate. There has been no confirmed announcement of a 60 FPS mode for the console.
GTA 6 on Xbox Series X and Series S
The Xbox Series X and the entry-level Xbox Series S are also expected to target 30 FPS, according to the report.Rockstar has yet to provide comprehensive official gameplay footage from the Xbox versions. However, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously expressed confidence in the development team's ability to optimise the game for the Xbox Series S.
The Series S presents a different hardware target from the Series X, but Rockstar has experience developing games for consoles with varying performance capabilities. The final performance of each version will become clearer as the studio releases more technical details.
Will GTA 6 support 40 FPS on PS5 Pro?
Some players have hoped that GTA 6 could offer a 40 FPS mode on the PS5 Pro for televisions and monitors with 120Hz displays. Such a mode could provide smoother gameplay than 30 FPS while retaining more graphical detail than a 60 FPS performance mode might allow. However, the reported 30 FPS target has not been accompanied by an official confirmation ruling out other performance modes. Players should therefore treat claims about the absence of a 40 FPS option as unconfirmed until Rockstar announces the game's final console specifications.
GTA 6 release date and PC version
GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S.Rockstar has not announced a PC release date. A PC version could eventually offer higher frame rates on sufficiently powerful hardware, depending on the game's optimisation and system requirements. However, its release timing and performance capabilities remain unconfirmed.
The original Grand Theft Auto V launched on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013. Console players did not receive a 60 FPS version until the game's release on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles.
Red Dead Redemption 2, meanwhile, remains limited to 30 FPS on consoles, despite its detailed open world. Whether GTA 6 follows a similar approach at launch or receives performance upgrades later will depend on Rockstar's final technical decisions and any subsequent updates.
